Chapter ZERO: A TWIST (BLOG # 4)

If you were to change one event or chapter from the Iliad, and replace it with your own story, what chapter or episode will that be?
Write your “version” of the story.
Narrate how will it affect the entire story or ending of the Iliad.

While I was reading the Epic Poem, The Iliad, there were these questions lingering in my head. "WHAT IF..."  questions were like monsters in my head trying to find out what could have happened if a certain part / scene in the story is changed.

The Greek Gods can't control the will of the humans but can motivate their emotions and manipulate nature.

Zeus and Thetis
If I were given the chance to change a certain part of the Epic Poem, I would want to give emphasis on the part where Achilles rather joined the Greek Army despite of Briseis' being the prize of King Agamemnon in exchange of Chryseis and I would want the poem to contain more about the Gods and their actions.

The flow of the story would be like this...
The epic poem begins the same but when the goddess Thetis approached Zeus to bring glory to Achilles, he would then grant the plead. After, Zeus communicated with King Agamemnon in his dreams and  encouraged Agamemnon to attack Troy. Thus, Agamemnon took this advice and immediately called a meeting among his highest officials. In the meeting, they concluded to attack the city of Priam, Troy. Even though the most officials did not want to because they have a bad feeling of what would happen, they immediately set sail towards Troy.

 BUT BEFORE THAT...
During the time when King Agamemnon had no choice but to give back the daughter of the Priest of Apollo, he demanded for someone in exchange and he chose Briseis, The wife of Achilles, and this made him furious and decided not to join the Greek Army, remember?

Achilles
In my VERSION, when Agamemnon asked for Briseis, Achilles thinks if he would join the battle or not. He  has to choose between 2 things: First, if he would go to the battlefield, or second, if he will be left behind during the war. But in spite of all the second thoughts that had come to his mind because of the lost of his wife, Briseis, he then made his decision to join the Greek Army by hook or by crook. In spite of all the problems that Achilles is undergoing like the lost of Briseis, he will first forget all of his problems and he will concentrate on the battle instead.

In this scene, we could see that even though Briseis was taken away from Achilles, He would still be strong and he would be brave enough to let go of her and face the Raging Trojans instead. Also, He would also choose to fight in the side of the Trojans and will do anything to win the war.

Going Back...
As they sail towards Troy, Poseidon helped them in crossing the stormy seas and raging waves. When they arrived at the beach, Troy was more than ready at their arrival. Agamemnon led his army swiftly, guided by Athena and protected by Hera. Zeus, on the other hand, ignored this for now for he wants Troy to suffer.
Then still the same from Iliad, up the part where Hera put Zeus to sleep.

The Almighty Zeus got pissed off that he threw the other gods and goddesses opposing him namely, Hera, Poseidon, Hephaestus, Athena and Hermes, to name a few. While the Gods were recovering from the pain they felt, Zeus took advantage of this and granted Achilles and Hector their stage in the war so that they would fight fiercely for so many days. The gods who opposed Zeus assembled themselves and composed a plan that would summon the Titans from their prison. They took the best officials of the Achaean, including Agamemnon, to where the Titans were held captives and granted them the strength of Gods to be able to free the Titans. These people went on and on fighting the guards that the Gods made to protect the prison where the Titans are held.

The Greek Army are about to lose the battle of Troy but with Achilles by their side, they were able to keep their head held high and their spirit strong. In the end, they reached a truce because the bloodshed made was too much on both sides, neither was winning or losing, no soldier wanted to fight anymore, and their resources are becoming limited. The battle of Troy became forgotten but the legend that the Achaean officials, including the King, disappeared that contributed to many speculations years after. Many years after the war, the Titans were freed from their prison, they would follow no one but themselves. They fought against the Gods for revenge on their almost eternal torment and suffering. Agamemnon and his colleagues are successful with the gods still helping them. The gods were also confused that most of them do not know which side to choose. Zeus chose Hector and Achilles as his hands that would fight against the other gods and the Titans, for he is too tired of fighting.
Gods Vs. Titans

In this sense, I thought that this would be the start of a new Epic where it focuses on the battle between the GODS, the TITANS, & the MORTALS where I think would be very interesting to find out what will happen now that the Mortals are involved in the conflict between the GODS and TITANS

How would these changes affects the entire Epic?
Out of the changes I made in the Epic, I have drawn certain effects of it on the whole story of the Iliad.

First, when Achilles chose to fight with the Greeks rather than deciding to not side with them just because of a woman, the POSSIBLE effect would be that his presence in the war would be a great alas for he is feared by the Trojans.

Second, as Achilles were able to join the war without any distractions in his way, another POSSIBLE effect would be that Patroclus, his most beloved comrade, will not die as he tried to dress up like Achilles and tried to lead the Greek Army where he met his death in the hands of Hector.

Lastly, there would be no much effect on the ending of the story for Achilles died before The Achaeans won the war against Troy. But the BIGGEST DIFFERENCE happened in my version of the Epic Poem, Achilles did everything to win the war, faced the Trojans from the very start of the war, and shocking events were prevented because of the changes I made.

Even though some changes were done in the story, or whatever change we try to do in the story,
THE ILIAD OF HOMER WILL STILL REMAIN AS THE GREATEST EPIC POEM EVER WRITTEN IN HISTORY.

A Hero's Tale (BONUS BLOG # 2)

Define HERO or HEROISM. Who do you consider the hero of the epic?
Why do you consider him as the epic's hero?
Cite evidences from the story.

Heroism? In Greek Mythology, it is someone who is very BRAVE, COURAGEOUS, STRONG, DEDICATED, SELFLESS, HUMBLE, and DETERMINED.

A HERO is mostly pictured as a warrior who:
  • Fights for his country but has a simple life;
  • Always takes up distinctive tasks which no one else ever dares to;
  • Has to undertake a long journey filled with challenges in his way and has to fight various battles to accomplish his goal.

These are just some character traits of a Hero that we usually have in mind.

BEOWULF, King of the Geats
Do you remember BEOWULF? He was a Great Hero who killed the hideous Grendel, who kept on attacking the residents of the mead hall of King Hrothgar, Grendel's Mom, who is a "monster-woman" who is very over-protective of his son, and the unnamed dragon where he was fatally wounded then died but was able to kill the said beast.

HERACLES, A Greek Hero
How about the Great Heracles? He is the son of Zeus and Alcmene (a mortal), gifted with unmeasurable strength where he strangled 2 serpents when he was a baby and killed a vicious lion before manhood. Hera was his main enemy which drove him very mad leading to the time when he killed his own children and his brothers'. With this, he exiled himself and consulted the oracle of Apollo. The Oracle told him to do the 12 LABORS which he successfully did. He died when his lover, Deianira, let him drink a garment soaked in a Nessus' blood which is poisonous. He was later taken to Mount Olympus and there, he was endowed with immortality after death.

These are just some of the greatest Heroes we can recall but are you even familiar of who is the Great Hero of the
EPIC POEM, ILIAD?

When I was reading the ILIAD, I tried to figure out who is the real hero of the said epic poem. I can't even decide how to determine a hero, Do you mean hero as in the MAIN CHARACTER or hero as in the MOST NOBLE CHARACTER?

If were talking about a Hero as the Main Character, ACHILLES is most probably best suitable for this because
even though his craziness is part of his character's flaws and his amazing skill and ability is most certainly epic, he is still considered as the Epic's main character.

But if were talking about a Hero as the Most Noble Character, I'd prefer HECTOR for this because even though he isn't the main character, he did have the best motives and he fights for his country and his beloved people, the Trojans. He strives for glory by saving his beloved people.

HECTOR & ACHILLES in battle
***BUT WHO IS THE REAL HERO OF ILIAD?***

If I were to choose, I'll pick the hero who :
  • Saves his beloved people out of love unlike those who doesn't even care about his people;
  • Does not seek vengeance but glory for a real hero does not possess a certain trait of being vengeful and avenging particular persons whom he loved;
  • Who is ready to die for his country and people for honor unlike those whose pride is so broad that he only thinks of himself and no one else.
  • Stands up for his people and gives them the inspiration to defend their homeland as well.
  • Sets as an example to his people and do what is good both for his people and his land.

I Am talking about HECTOR, which I consider as the Epic Poem's Real Hero. Why? Hector is the kind of hero who went to war not to kill out of his own glory but to save his own beloved and precious people. He is the kind of king who kept his passion for Troy burning in his mind and heart and gets inspiration from his beloved people. He even fought the Great Achilles even though he knows he has no match against him but because of the hope he holds on to while fighting the oppressor. Another is that Hector has one of the most tender scenes in the book, where he says his farewell to his beloved wife, Andromache and kisses his little boy on the forehead before going out to battle. As far as the motive and likability of the character's concern, I'd go with the MIGHTY HECTOR. Can you be like Hector? Are you willing to sacrifice your life just to save those who you love?

To conclude my discussion, I would like to share this inspirational Quote to you:

"If one is determined to die for the truth, even a common man can create history."

No God has NO Weakness (BONUS BLOG # 1)

2. For the Greeks, the Gods are personalities with human failings. This is clearly seen in the character of Zeus in books 11-17.
Cite some events that show Zeus' weaknesses.

Almighty ZEUS, Ruler of the sky, King of the Gods, God of Thunder and Lightning, and a father to all, Gods and Mortals alike. He is the youngest son of CRONUS (Titan God of Time) & RHEA (Titan Goddess of Fertility).
His siblings were:
(1)
   Hestia (Goddess of the Hearth)
Demeter ( Goddess of Agriculture and Fertility)
Hera (Husband of Zeus and Queen of the Gods)
   Hades (God of the Underworld)
   Poseidon (God of the Seas)

His notable symbols were the thunderbolt, bull, eagle, and oak tree.

There is this one quote from Book 1 that goes like this:
"Even the gods who are not his natural children address him as Father, and all the gods rise in his presence."

From this quote, it only shows how a great God Zeus is to his fellow Gods and mortals. It can be drawn here that he is a well-respected God and everyone favors him, not only in Mount Olympus but the whole world.

In Greek Mythology, he is known to be the strongest God that other Gods wanted to anger him. He has a weapon of a thunderbolt where he shoots it out from the sky to frighten the soldiers, bleeds the courage off of the mortals, etc.

(2)
There is also one instance where Zeus is rendered powerless every time HERA seduces him to her plots. She even fooled Zeus after seducing him and made him fell asleep as Poseidon can turn the tide of the ongoing war.

I believe in the saying:
"Behind every man's success is a woman"

WHY? Well, for most of us, this statement is TRUE because Women is the inspiration of most Men to become more responsible, more productive, and more independent. Every man wants the best for their wives and as for Zeus, Hera is his wife.

Hera, on the other hand, hates him after tricking her in the form of a bedraggled, rain-soaked cuckoo and when Zeus returned in his true form he ravished Hera and he shamed her into marrying him. Their wedding night is a glorious one - one that lasted 300 years.
Together, they had 3 children:
 ARES (God of War)
HEBE (Goddess of Youth and Spring)
EILEITHYIA (Goddess of Childbirth and Midwifery)

Although Zeus is hated by Hera, he still loves her as his wife and is used in her ways, whether good or bad.
Therefore, Hera is his weakness even though he is the strongest and mightiest of all the Gods on Mount Olympus and of all the mortals on Earth alike.

Every God has its own weakness.....

I just  thought of making a Bonus blog because of my interest on the question.
Thank you for reading this and see you on my next post!

A Noble Warrior and a Loving Companion (BLOG # 3)

3. Patroclus is a noble comrade and warrior. Do you agree?
Prove your answer by citing details from the book.

Who is PATROCLUS? He is the son of Menoetius, grandson of Actor, King of Opus, and Achilles' favorite companion. Patroclus is a man of loyalty because of his loyalty and devotion to the Greek Army and of course, because of his unbreakable loyalty to his best friend AND/OR LOVER???, ACHILLES (who is his cousin, for your info).
His Loyalty, however, was tested to the Greek Army when he engage himself into battle as a substitute for Achilles who in that time does not want to join the said battle.

(1)
In his childhood, Patroclus accidentally killed his friend, Clysonymus, where they had a quarrel over a game of dice. His father, Menoetius, and him went away in exile to hide from revenge. Eventually, they took shelter at the palace of King Peleus and there, Patroclus first met Achilles and since then they became good companions.
King Peleus, sent the 2 young warriors into the wilderness where Chiron, the cave-dwelling wise king of the Centaurs, will raise them and teach them how to be skilled and wise warriors.

It is said that Patroclus is somehow older than Achilles.

Patroclus is a loyal brother-in-arms to Achilles. For instance, when Achilles asks Patroclus to search an area and look for any casualties, Patroclus would follow his orders without any question and knowing that he could get himself into risk while doing it during an on-going war. Patroclus does what Achilles asks him to do without any hesitation or regret for the reason Achilles is the leader of the mighty Myrmidons (brave, fierce, and skilled warriors during the Trojan War), and another is that he loved Achilles very much. Patroclus is determined and passionate, but impulsive and reckless, as seen in his actions in the epic poem, ILIAD.

(2)
As the tide of turned away from the Greeks and the Trojans burned their ships, Patroclus cant stand seeing the Greeks further losses to the enemy and convinced Achilles to lend him his armor and lead the mighty myrmidons into battle. By this event, it eventually lead to his death. Patroclus' assault pushed back to the gates of Troy the fearful Trojans, even Hector, the Greatest Trojan warrior, for they thought it was 'Achilles' who is driving them back. He only did this to uplift the spirits of the Greek Warriors and let the Trojans fell back with FEAR. Unfortunately, Patroclus disobeyed Achilles because his order was to only save the burning ships and not attack the Trojans but because of his LUST for combat, he did not listen to the advise of Achilles and with this, he was distracted by Apollo (God of the Sun), wounded by Euphorbos, and finally killed by Hector. Patroclus had killed 53 Trojan soldiers including the Son of Zeus, Sarpedon.

This shows how noble and loyal Patroclus is to the Greek Army. His death showed that he fulfilled his duty as a warrior and he died with no regrets for he knew to himself that he has done something noble for his land.

***ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT PART OF THE ASSIGNED BOOKS, I WOULD LIKE TO ELABORATE MY DISCUSSION UP TO THE EFFECTS OF THE DEATH OF PATROCLUS!***

The DEATH of Patroclus is the cause of the devastating return of Achilles to the war against the Trojans. Achilles, with mixed rage and grief, set aside his issues with King Agamemnon and went back to the battlefield unarmed. It is said that his mother, Thetis, presented his new armor forged by Hephaestus and used it as he appears back in the battlefield to avenge his beloved, Patroclus. There, Achilles killed Hector, the killer of Patroclus, and desecrated his body, tying it by the heels to his chariot and dragging it through the dust.

Achilles hardly accept the fact that Patroclus is dead and he grieves greatly; he even refused to dispose the body of his beloved but he was soon persuaded as Patroclus appeared to him saying that he couldn't enter the underworld without a proper cremation.

The funeral of Patroclus takes place where Achilles offered horses, dogs, and 12 Trojan captives before cremating Patroclus in the funeral pyre and his bones were put into a golden urn and eventually buried it.
This event marked the funeral games in honor of his beloved departed. The games include:
  • Chariot Race (Won by DIOMEDES)
  • Boxing ( Won by EPEIOUS)
  • Wrestling (Draw b/w AIAS and ODYSSEUS)
  • Foot Race (Won by ODYSSEUS)
  • Duel (Draw b/w AIAS and DIOMEDES)
  • Discus Throw (Won by POLYPOITES)
  • Archery (Won by MERIONES)
  • Javelin Throw (Won by AGAMEMNON, unopposed)

WHAT COULD BE THE POSSIBLE REACTION BETWEEN THE 2 PARTIES???
For the GREEKS:  One possible reaction is that they will feel sad because of the loss of a worthy and noble warrior and comrade. Nestor will feel sad as well because it is not on Hector's plan that Patroclus will die. It is a great shock that Patroclus is dead and all of the Greek soldiers are grieving for they lost a very loyal warrior like him.

For the TROJANS: One possible reaction is that they will think its all a big 'set-up' because they indeed lost a great number of soldiers. They even felt confused because when Hector killed "Achilles" (who is Patroclus), they rejoiced for their hero killed the Greatest Greek Hero. unfortunately, when Hector took of the helmet, they were all shocked of what they saw and it was Patroclus. Another is that they will feel terrified for the fact that Achilles is still alive and is hunting each one of them to have his revenge.

(3)
If you would ask me, it only shows that Patroclus is indeed a NOBLE WARRIOR. Of the given possible reactions, Patroclus put his life into risk just to show how loyal he is to his land and to die with honor. He killed a good number of Trojan troops for an ordinary warrior like him. He is a brave warrior for he wanted to act & dress as 'Achilles' and lead the mighty Myrmidons against the Trojans in battle. Patroclus is considered to be a strong-willed man for he died because of his will to defeat the Trojans.

 PATROCLUS' LOVE STORY

The video above summarizes the topic I discussed to you. I hope this simple video presentation could be a big help. The video also narrates the 'FRIENDSHIP' between Achilles and Patroclus.

I really had fun in doing this one because I am really interested and I even feel intrigued.

"ACHILLES, a Great Hero, a Poor King" (BLOG # 2)

1. Analyze the character of Achilles as shown in Books 9-11. Are his decisions appropriate for a king like him? Why/ why not? What kind of warrior is he?

(1)
 Achilles? Achilles? Who is Achilles?
Let me tell you something about this Great Warrior of the Trojan War.

ACHILLES is The King of the Achaeans, the central character of the epic poem, and the greatest, strongest, and skillful warrior of all the Greek soldiers. Some said that he has attributed of being the most handsome of all the heroes assembled to conquer Troy.

He is the son of the sea-nymph Thetis and Peleus. According to stories, Thetis anointed the Achilles in ambrosia and put him on top of a fire to burn away the mortal parts of his body. She was interrupted by Peleus and she abandoned both father and son in a rage, leaving his 'heel' vulnerable.

Going back, Achilles lead the Greek army in the assault in Troy.
He is very known in the epic poem as a good leader to the Greeks who were left alone during their battle against the Trojans.

(2)
Achilles is a kind of a warrior being FEARED by all the other soldiers during the war because it is said that every time the Trojans see the helmet of Achilles, hear the name of Achilles, or even see Achilles in person, they become scared, nervous, or even weakened at a moment. Just a single "swooosh" of his sharp sword, every enemy could be killed in an instant! He is also a brave warrior for the only reason that he would do anything to win a battle or combat for the glory of his land. Of course, every good trait of a character also has an opposite one. I am referring to him being a selfish kind of person. He only thinks of himself and only wants his soldiers to follow the orders of what he only believes in. Another instance is when he refused to join and aid the Greek Army as they march in the gates of Troy only because he was dishonored by King Agamemnon, the commander of the Greek Army, who had taken BRISEIS as a prize for himself. I could say that because of his attitude, it leaves a great mark on his reputation as a king.

We know that Achilles is the king of the Achaeans but are his actions / decisions appropriate for a king like him? Is he a fair kind of king during those times?

In my opinion, his decision being KING not to aid the Greek warriors to battle against the Trojans is not an APPROPRIATE decision for a king like him because it shows that he only thinks of himself and he let his emotions decide for him which is not suppose to be. WHY??? For the reason he left his own army in the middle of the battle and he even prayed to his mother, Thetis, to convince Zeus to help the Trojans gain ground in the war, so that he may regain his honor. He should have sacrificed himself in battle like the other Greek warriors who are with him.

As king, you should set an example to your warriors because they look up to you
as the greatest warrior and even the greatest leader they could ever serve.
As king, you should accept all the problems and challenges you might encounter
and you must use your mind wisely and think about what is best for your land and people, not for what is best for YOU. It will only show that you're selfish.
As king, you must not be affected for the loss of someone whom is very dear to you
because it will affect your actions and decisions as the highest and most-powerful person in the land. If this happens, your emotions would be the one to decide for you and it might end up putting the whole land and your people in peril.

(3)
To sum it all up, Achilles' decisions is not appropriate or suitable for a brave king like him. But, I guess his decision not siding with the Greeks has a reason and I can say that it is because Agamemnon has fooled Achilles several times and I guess the worst instance was when Agamemnon exchange Chryseis with Briseis, whom Achilles loved so much and because of this, Achilles ended up burning up with rage over Agamemnon and soon made the decision of not helping the Greek Army in battle, instead.

The humanization of Achilles by the events of the war is an important theme of the narrative which makes it more interesting to read.
If I were you, I'll start reading this famous epic poem, Iliad of Homer.

Thank you for spending your time reading this and stay tuned for my next post.

A King's "Stubborness of Heart" (BLOG # 1)

1. Narrate how King Agamemnon shows stubbornness of heart in books 1-5.
    · Cite modern day examples/people who display the same stubbornness of heart.

AGAMEMNON, King of Mycenae
(1)
AGAMEMNON, King of Mycenae and commander in chief of the coalition that attacked Troy, is a one of a kind leader.

He is the son of King Atreus of Mycenae and the brother of King Menelaus of Sparta.
He has excellent fighting techniques and tactics and has a brilliant mind like a true ruler.

The only problem about him that makes him a bit flaw, is his "ATTITUDE". Believe it or not, King Agamemnon is very stubborn. He is also referred to as a hard-headed, selfish, and arrogant kind of person.

There are some instances in the book entitled "ILIAD" wherein King Agamemnon exhibits these flaws that I found very childish and immature for a leader like him.

First of all, as far as I can remember from the book, Achaean soldiers were raiding towns near the kingdom of Troy and eventually captured two women namely,Chryseis and Briseis.
King Agamemnon told the priest namely, CHRYSES, whose daughter was taken as a prize for Agamemnon, such harsh words while he was offering a ransom in exchange of his daughter. Agamemnon declined and rudely ordered the priest to leave his sight. Since Agamemnon did not respect the plead of the priest, out of anger and despair, Chryses prayed to Apollo to shower down a curse of arrows on the Achaians if the king will still not release his daughter who is innocent and pure.
ACHILLES, Greek Hero of the Trojan War

In the end, King Agamemnon has no choice but to return back the daughter of Chryses but because of his greediness, he demands something in exchange. And guess what, he wanted BRISEIS, the wife of ACHILLES. This angers Achilles because of the stubborness of King Agamemnon along with his Greediness towards women. They got themselves into a quarrel and finally, Achilles felt insulted and refused to side along with the Greeks in fighting  against the Trojans.

In my opinion, King Agamemnon has such greed and less patience in his character. What he only wants is the riches of the world, and ofcourse, the most beautiful and fairest of the women. He is a hot-headed person wherein he ordered the priest to get out of his sight without any respect for the priest's dignity.

It is a SHAME to have such leader like Agamemnon and I can relate him to some leaders with this kind of issue.
Pres. JOSEPH ESTRADA

Hmmm, I think one good example is JOSEPH ESTRADA, a very controversial president of The Philippines. He too, doesn't know how to handle his own decisions and sometimes put the country into risk. He is known to be a very popular and professional actor before thinking of entering politics. In 1998, he won the Presidency and unfortunately, he was impeached before his term ended. For him, being president is being powerful and rich. But the thing that he doesn't know, being president should serve as a good example to the people and be of service to those who needed help. In the duration of his term, he has fully enjoyed his power and eventually using the country's money just to satisfy his needs through corruption but in the end, it only led him to his impeachment in 2001.

See. I told you, I could think of someone like Agamemnon. It is a disgrace having someone to lead us if he only thinks of himself instead of his own fellowmen. A leader should be of service to everyone who needs help and not sitting on his office and enjoys the money of his fellowmen.

Thank you for reading and I'll see you in my next post!
